MySpace.com - EROS - Everywhere, US - www.myspace.com/eros
Yo, G. (And the G stands for Galt.)
Objectivist hip hop. There’s nothing really good about that idea, is there?
Welcome to the world of Eros - Ayn Rand influenced rapper. I’m not overly thrilled with the idea of criticizing artists becuase making art is hard work and making pithy comments isn’t. And Eros has done stuff - he was on the Vans Warped tour at some point and his MySpace page has some tracks on it. But in a world already skeptical of white rappers, white Ayn Rand influenced rappers are going to have an uphill battle. Of course, Objectivists love uphill battles. The more hill, the better.
How’s the music? Sometimes there’s the white toast unfunkiness of MC 900 Ft. Jesus circa The City Sleeps but without experimentation or any sense of irony. Some of the tracks feel like the music has been done by the Beastie Boys a long time ago…like using Led Zepplin and AC/DC as backing tracks. And the whole enterprise feel to me like a lot of other Objectivist influenced art I’ve seen over the years - didactic, preachy, and like a wamed over cut and paste of the copy on the back covers of paperback editions of Virtue Of Selfishness or The Romantic Manifesto.
To whit…Eros writes…
I think, I speak, I act – for myself.
I exist at the disposal of no one, I live at the expense of no other. It is my right – and mine alone – to enjoy the benefits, and suffer the consequences, of my creations.I choose the means, I choose the ends – I alone am responsible for my life. I am proud, I am noble, I am great.
I made this.
Umm. Okay. Word to your money.
