Ramsay

on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

So, I just found out I was banned from the site Television Without Pity because of ’site pimping’ for discussions I was having there about Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares.

I first got a warning on that site when I posted a link to my article about the interview I did with Buddy and Brian from Finn McCool’s. I only posted the link there because 1) I’d noticed hits from TWoP coming into my site after someone else posted a link about all the Sebastian’s stuff I’d written about and 2) because that article is original, interesting information about Kitchen Nightmares that I thought people would want to read.

So, posting that link to a good article got me a TWoP warning. Then I got a second warning for mentioning the first warning.

Then after Finn McCool’s ‘restaurant critic’ Samantha posted here on this site, I mentioned it (with no link or mention of my URL) and I quoted a large chunk of what Samantha wrote. This morning, I got this for TWoP Nikita, the facist idiot who polices TWoP…

Site-pimping isn’t just providing a link to your site. It’s advertising it yourself on TWoP in any way, and you’re still doing it. Banned.

I honestly don’t know how I could have mentioned what Samantha said without also mentioning where or how she said it. She did, in fact, post on my blog. How can I quote her without sourcing the quote - which in this case happened to be me? Was I just supposed to blurt out “Samantha said this somewhere, maybe…”

I have no problem with rational forum moderation - what TWoP is doing is just stupid and I had a bunch of TWoP readers email me privately to say they hate the overzealous policing there. I can totally understand banning someone for spam. I can understand that if someone is just posting their link over and over, that’s not cool. But everything I posted was good, solid and original content that added to the discussion and would be of total interest to the readers of TWoP. I didn’t just link and run, either - I was an active forum participant engaged in relevant discussions. And the internet is about links.

I could care less about TWoP. There is nothing technically interesting about their site at all. (A forum? Wow! Impressive in 1995.) There are however a lot of smart people over there who had interesting discussions about Kitchen Nightmares. Any of you are welcome to comment here (and even link to your own site!) or tell me another site to go where the Kontent Kops like TWoP Nikita aren’t drunk with their own power.

You do know that TWoP is owned by NBC Universal right?

And that if someone happened to cruise around in your entrys they’d see strike coverage, some of which happened outside the Peacock network right? So in my mind it may not just be about Gordon Ramsey related stuff even though the idea sounds a little paranoid.

If you want I’ll ask Pen about setting you up with a Ramsey’s thread at the fans4wga ipbfree forums (although to my knowledge BBC America will be unaffected by the strike)

  2. Lee Says:

    I’m sure it’s just their silly policies….

Thanks for promoting Shane’s stuff so much! I think his latest post may be the best one in some ways…

  3. John Kovalic Says:

My, don’t THEY think they’re the next Fark…

I used to go there from time to time. Honestly, I found it boring, and haven’t been back in months.

  4. levander Says:

No, I didn’t know NBC Universal owned TWOP. No wonder there’s no real community feel at TWOP.

Do the moderators like Nazi Nikkita (of Kitchen Nightmares adminship infamy) get paid, or do they volunteer to do free work for a multinational corporation in their free time?

If Nazi Nikkita is running around being bitch hall monitor for free for such a large corporation, she’s nuttier than I thought. I didn’t think this was possible….

  5. Lee Says:

I read an article about TWoP that said that recaps paid $250 but moderation was unpaid, but not sure how current that information is.

  6. Lee Says:

I just found other people complaining about the moderation at TWoP…

  7. Cathryn Says:

Once upon a time, TWoP was cool and full of lively and enjoyable discussion. I made friends there that I still have. Now it sucks and I’m afraid to post because I don’t know what’s okay and what gets you banned. I suspect they’ve alienated a lot of people who were there back in the days of Mighty Big TV. (They had to change the name back in 2002-ish for legal reasons that never were disclosed.) I still read a few recaps (though for a couple of the shows, I’m not sure why . . .) and occasionally some forum threads, but it’s nothing like it used to be and it doesn’t surprise me one bit that you got banned for some legitimate discussion.

  8. Laura Linger Says:

As if I needed another reason to like you.

No site-pimping here, but here is just a few choice rants from my own blog about the crash of the Hindenberg that is Television Without Pity.

    http://lauralinger.blogspot.com/search?q=Sars

By the way, they have locked the threads for two of my favorite forums, and by the look of their numbers, those two forums were wildly popular. I wonder what their advertisers have to say about stuff like this?

“And that if someone happened to cruise around in your entrys they’d see strike coverage, some of which happened outside the Peacock network right? So in my mind it may not just be about Gordon Ramsey related stuff even though the idea sounds a little paranoid.”

I highly doubt that. They get overzealous in their moderation, yes. Orders aren’t to shut you down aren’t coming from GE Headquarters in Fairfield. That’s Fairfield, Connecticut, Lemon! The Sheindhart Wig Company has much bigger problems to deal with than hippy liberals and striking. Bigger problems like orange children in Vermont.

    In conclusion, get a haircut.

    Sincerely,

  10. Marjorie Levine Says:

    I am a 61 year-old woman, and I was a 5th and 6th grade teacher in
    NYC for 34 years.
I taught from 1968-2002, and I am now retired.
I was “banned” by TWoP Bayliss for “ignoring previous warnings.”
My two warnings were for cross-posting and not using proper
    capitalization.
    (I began a sentence with a non-capitalized letter.)
    I was astounded.
I could not believe I was “banned” for such nonsense.
I decided to pursue this absurd matter.
I sent a letter to Bravo viewer relations in Burbank, CA.
I sent an E-mail to “Glark.” I received a reply in which he stated:
“I’ve forwarded this to the head moderator. She will look at it and
    write you back shortly.”
After about six days and many tedious and redundant communications
with people at Bravo and TWoP, my status remains “banned” and no
head moderator has written to me.
I am amazed how Bravo (which is owned by NBC) is allowing
such clear abuses of power by the TWoP moderators.
I want this addressed, and as I search on the internet I am finding
that many former members of TWoP have similar stories.
Perhaps if we took action as a group, we would be more effective
    and things might change.
I honestly believe that Bravo would find this ludicrous and not
support the actions of the TWoP moderators to “ban” members for
reasons that are not egregious violations of Terms of Service.

  11. PR Says:

TWoP is not worth your time. If you are posting there, stop. If you are a member there, cancel. If you have a complaint about their actions, publish. Publish or perish. At least the Nazis had a purpose, awful though it was. These people are merely drunk with power — the tyranny of a five-year-old, like Billy Mumy in that Twilight Zone episode — and are often what the legal world calls “arbitrary and capricious.”

Keep those angry letters flowing to Bravo, and also to the TWoP advertisers.

P.S. Nikita is an appropriate name, although after reading their policies, I really think they should have opted for Stalin.

  12. bfish Says:

I still read and occassionally post on TWoP, but find other forums on my favorite shows more interesting. Like you, I ran afoul of TWoP Nikita for some very innocuous comment about how many people had posted about an incident on a TV show. I don’t know if the other moderators are as overzealous and unreasonable as this one is. Judging by some of the other examples above, your experiences, and mine, they really need to lighten up!

  13. Kimist1 Says:

I was banned by Bayliss too, for ONE post. I was accused of being a troll for one post. I’ve been a member of TWoP when they only had a handful of shows, I am completely in shock, and surprisingly my feelings are hurt.

  14. Jim Says:

I just got banned…literally about 90 minutes ago…for going off-topic apparently one too many times. I thought I was just banned from the particular thread I was posting on, but no…it’s the whole damn site!

All the posts that got me in trouble (three out of three hundred to be exact) were about religion and I’m agnostic. Some kind of karmic revenge?:)

  15. Dan Says:

I got banned for being offensive. Apparently saying someone is gay is complimentary but saying someone is transgendered is insulting. You know what’s really offensive? Double standards.

  16. Joy Says:

I just got banned for nonsense too. But I knew that I would get banned, I started out my post stating that I was perfectly fine with it, I just wanted the moderator Bayliss to get my message.

I wanted to respond to the warning I was given and there is no way to email anyone about it, so I had to post and ask someone to forward to the mod. I was leaving anyway so the banning doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is the snotty little message:
” Banned for board drama. Please locate a fan site or fan club where diversity of opinion is less of a priority. Thanks.”

What? My issue had nothing to do with postings on the board, it was about the idiotic moderation. The mischaracterization of my issue is salt on the wound. As if I object to opinions. And if you don’t want board drama, how about providing a way for people to reach mods off of the board. I know why they don’t provide this. It’s because they are so drunk with power - unchallenged power - they just don’t want to hear it.
They do their bannings, send out their snotty little messages, and never hear a word about. Like a little dictator, shutting down all the free speech. Ha. Must be nice.

Thank you so much for the chance to vent. I just googled and this came up.

  17. Drama Says:

I was just banned by Bayliss too, for ONE POST. My first ever warning after a few years and a few hundred posts, and in a very snotty and condescending tone! I am shocked and a bit hurt. I am a reasonable adult, not a troll, and have always enjoyed the board a lot. I made the mistake of expressing my fandom for a character and I made an obvious (to me, I guess) joking tongue in cheek comment about people on the internet, loosely quoting a reality contestant who had said that in the past. To my complete shock, it was taken seriously and I was spoken down to and told that I obviously have a problem with differing opinions and that I need to go find some little fan board where complaining endlessly is appreciated. Or something like that. WTF? What makes it so bad is that my post was completely misinterpreted by her (him?). Had I been given the chance to explain, or had it questioned with a simple warning, I would have been glad to explain and feel badly and edit it out if it came off wrong. How can I get banned for having an opinion by being told that I don’t value other people’s opinions? I never intended to criticize other posters opinions in my post at all, not once.

This is a huge disappointment to me as I’ve always had the utmost respect for the site and the people who post there. Moderating to keep huge arguments and trolls away is one thing. Being flat-out heavy handed and knocking people off left and right for any real or perceived offense simply from being on a power trip is a very sad shame.

  18. Joy Says:

It’s almost pathological. Bayliss is like the bastard child of Kim Jong Il and Barney Fife.

My frustration was that I was accused of something and I had nowhere to express that the accusation was wrong.

    I finally found this:
    http://www.blogger.com/profile/07128014310114522037

    Jacob is Bayliss on TWOP.

  19. Drama Says:

Joy, I think we’re in the same boat and got knocked off in the same place when he swept through. I believe I saw your post before it was yanked, and know why it was you were warned. I was close to where you were, same area, different thread, same dictator, slightly different reason. I can honestly say it’s ridiculous and crazy, not to mention uneven moderation because the same set of rules don’t seem to apply to everyone. I just want you to know you are not the only one, and I’d bet there were more besides us.

I think it stings the most because I wasn’t given a chance after a warning. I was there for a few years, was a contributing member to the board AND to the Glarkware store on many, many occasions, and had never done anything warn-worthy before (not that I think this was either, but still). To be chastised like a 3 year old in such an ugly, condescending way and have my posting privileges yanked without even a chance to plead my case or change my tone/post was wrong. IMO it doesn’t serve the needs of the community as a whole, and Glark will never know what happened - one of his paying store customers was kicked out for petty reasons.

They really need someone who will answer concerns and review bannings if necessary to prevent this from happening so often.

  20. Dan Says:

It’s annoying but relieving to see that I wasn’t the only one to experience the fascism of Jacob. I’ve kind of hated that self serving, thirty five page recap writing, pretentious pillock since the moment he turned up on the site but my contempt for him has multiplied tenfold since I got banned and, after finding this site, discovered how he specifically has clearly been on a rampage lately. I highly advise anyone and everyone who has been treated to his incredibly rude behavior to put it in writing and send it along to his personal email address JAClifton@gmail.com. Will it get you unbanned? No. Will you feel better afterward? Yeah, probably.

  21. Laura Linger Says:

From moderator “Tennison” in the thread for MTV’s True Life:

“General note for the thread: The posts with ideas for future shows are creative and often entertaining, but try to stick to talking about actual shows. For shows that have multiple threads, posting creative lists or desires for the future would be fine, but this one has just the one thread, and the extra posts make it harder for people to read the thread for information about aired shows.

    Thanks.”

Again, because what the forum posters were coming up with was far and away funnier than anything Sars, et.al., comes up with. It’s not even about a show that they “weecap,” so I don’t see what the big deal is. Then again, I never do.

  22. Laura Linger Says:

    Here’s a goodie from Jacob/Bayliss:

“Actually, what you were told is that we can’t police those kinds of things, and that the person would be watched for signs of trolling — which they’re obviously not doing. Please stop using the FTC as a toy.

This post has been edited by TWoP Bayliss: Yesterday @ 7:27 pm.”

  23. Troll Says:

“I was just banned by Bayliss too, for ONE POST.”

Me three. I didn’t even get a warning. And I had posted over 1,000 times on that website. He said I was a troll. Why? I’m guessing because I politely defended a contestant from some fairly slanderous attacks… on two boards. A mortal sin, clearly.

I think I know what’s going on at TWoP: Their “forums” aren’t really forums at all - they’re merely ballot boxes where you are only allowed to register your positive or negative reactions to what you saw on a particular show. Any reply to other posters beyond the moronic “ITA” or “I politely disagree” will get you banned.

You know, I don’t think I’m even going to try to go back. Not unless I get an e-mail apology from Bayliss himself, and then an e-mail from TWoP… telling me they’ve fired him.

  24. Drama Says:

Sorry to hear this happened to you, but like Dan, I’m somewhat relieved (consoled?) to know that it wasn’t just me. I could re-register in a while, but sadly I have such a sour opinion of the moderation there that I get a bad feeling just lurking to read. I feel like you do about that, Troll.

And yet, it *is* the biggest TV forum on the net AFAIK. I visit FORT every once in a great while for reality shows, or FF… but I enjoyed the feel of TWOP in that it was more adult discussion rather than very young posters. NOT that there’s anything wrong with the young teenage style, I just felt like I fit into the discussions a bit more.

So if anyone has any alternate forum sites to suggest, I’m all ears.

  25. Laura Linger Says:

“Closed for a bit. This really doesn’t bode well.”

-TWOP’s Strega, on the forum for Real Housewives of NYC

  26. Troll Says:

Just heard that the founders of TWoP - Sars, Wing Chun, and Glark - are leaving. Their last day is tomorrow. Here is the official announcement, posted on March 6:

    http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=3166621&pid=9872681&st=0&#entry9872681

  27. Laura Linger Says:

Buh-bye, you three. You won’t be missed.

File this under, “Goes Around, Comes Around, What.”

  28. Ace Says:

Got “Baylissed” today. Treated me like an 11 year old. I suspect s/he is a college student at a very expensive university.

  29. Sick of TWoP Says:

To whoever upthread posted Bayliss’s Blogger profile, thanks. I don’t feel so bad about being condescended to by him anymore because he looks like one of those dorks who got teased and needs to put others down to feel good about himself.

I didn’t get banned by him, I left TWoP on my own volition because I got tired of the drama. He sent me nasty messages for no reason and gave me three warnings in a row.

It is so sad that instead of being a productive citizen, he needs to get his kicks by talking down to people on an online forum of all places.

  30. Laura Linger Says:

In many ways, those of us who hate TWOP for its tactics could not have hoped for a better poster child than Bayliss. He incarnates what sucks about that site. He reeks of it.

  31. Marjorie Levine Says:

I have been persistently pursuing my “banning” since Feb. 2nd. I became aware that all over the internet many former TWoP members were discussing what they were calling their own “arbitrary and capricious” bannings. On Feb. 3rd, I sent a letter to Lauren Zalaznick, president of Bravo. I wrote:
“TWoP needs to be reviewed and perhaps the staff and moderators need to be advised that their severe consequences for minor mistakes are absurd and will no longer be allowed. They need to lighten up at TWoP and stop what appears to be a total abuse of power. It is one thing for a site to be proud of strong management and elaborate rules and strict moderation, but it has moved into just plain ridiculous.
I wanted to reference my personal situation so Bravo, which now owns TWoP, would address the issue. Bravo promotes the website for all viewers to enjoy, and I did not deliberately and with malice violate the site rules. Any rational person would view my Member Notes and my last post and not find anything ban-worthy. Do you support that a member can be “removed” for “any reason or no reason?” Do you believe that the expectation of having posters always and without error “meet the guidelines” is what makes the site “successful?” I am of the opinion that banning should be reserved for egregious and serious violations of Terms of Service. Otherwise, eventually there will be a point at which all the voices of those who were banned will come together out of frustration and find a way to be heard and the site will “jump the shark.”
I followed-up with letters and phone calls to other NBC executives, and as of this date I still have not received any written reply.

  32. Laura Linger Says:

    Marjorie:

Good show. I will say this: I think that there is a major shift over at TWOP already. Some of the more popular threads have been deserted lately, like The Bachelor and Keeping Up With The Kardashians. There are actual “regulars” who write little messages like, “Hello? Brand-new episode aired yesterday, where is everybody?”

The “mods” also closed the wildly popular thread for Jon And Kate Plus 8 for unfathomable reasons. I know for an absolute fact that that thread was the sole reason why some posters were on the site in the first place.

  33. Marjorie Levine Says:

Sadly, I had to throw in the towel. I had persistently tried to have NBC address TWoP’s “capricious and arbitrary bannings.”
I began with my own banning, and on January 26th I sent several E-mails to TWoP staff. I followed-up with a phone call to Dan Manu, the director of TWoP. I discussed my own banning for what I thought was a failure to begin a sentence with a capital letter.
On Feb. 3rd, in an E-mail reply from a TWoP moderator, another rule was cited to more fully justify their action. I was told I had not read the pages that came before my posted question. (Actually I had, but I was confused about two AI auditioners).
Then, I sent a letter to Bravo president Lauren Zalaznick to appeal the moderator’s decision. When she did not reply, I sent letters to John Wallace, but his office directed me to Burbank’s Jeff Gaspin. His office sent my letters back to NY… to Jeff Hoeh, an NBC attorney. I was spinning my wheels. It was clear I was not going to receive a written decision and my ban would not be lifted.
In a last ditch effort, on March 17th I sent the whole pack of documentation to the president of NBC, Jeff Zucker. But alas, a check today at USPS’s “track and confirm” indicates the certified mail has not yet been delivered. The thought crossed my mind that it might have been refused because maybe I am now “persona non grata.”
I am disappointed Mr. Zucker has not received the envelope because I named websites all over the internet where former banned members were expressing anger and unhappiness over the way TWoP was managed and the way they were treated.
I am sure NBC thinks I am a “pest;” maybe even a total “crazy” person. Most banned members would not have bothered. So, why did I spend weeks “calling all over,” as one NBC executive stated? The answer is not all that complicated. I wanted to once again be an active member with the ability to participate in the forums which I enjoyed. And I wanted to shed light on the issue; to try to get NBC to be aware of a matter about which perhaps they had no idea. I wanted Bravo and NBC to hear the voices. I think they did. I feel good; sometimes change happens in small scale ways when “nuts” such as me get involved. Now… I am done.
    And maybe, just maybe… nah.

  34. Kim D Brefeb Says:

TwoP has really gone downhill quickly. Remember the promises from Bravo and Sars, Wing Chun & Glark etc. about how the site would never lose the “snark”, that’s why Bravo bought it? UH right. I couldn’t believe how quickly the “RHoNY” thread was shut down, then the RHoOC thread, then Jon & Kate …. sure it’s going to be the same site.

I can only hope that the firings are due to objections about creative control …. but then, hey, children, you sold out. What, for a few million dollars? You know how fast that goes in New York? Maybe you would, if you let people post more on the RHoNY thread about totally legitimate topics of discussion.

As for being ticked off when I was banned, I just had to suck it up and realize there is no 1st amendment right to belong to a message board. But, I love these other sites that remember the dissenters. Suck it, TwoP.

  35. sabrinasmom Says:

Got banned for using the word pimp. Even though twop uses the word pimp in their faq or dos/don’ts. Snark? What snark - that site is moderated to the hilt - you can’t say anything remotely snarky - evangelical christians most likely!

  36. Drama Says:

Marjorie, no matter what comes of your appeals, I am grateful and proud of how hard you pursued it for ALL of us who have dealt with being banned unfairly. We all seem to have one thing in common - none of us did anything to purposely disrupt the site or break the rules in any way. I’m very sorry that no one actually received your information or was willing to follow through, but you tried and that matters a lot. This is the one site I’ve found with people who are not happy about this, along with one other blog. If there are others, please post or contact me via email if possible. I am disheartened and disappointed. TWoP was one of the 3 or 4 “must see” sites on the internet that I visited on a daily basis, and now, although I can still read there, I rarely bother as I am so bitter about the unfair treatment of so many. And one of the saddest things? Posts are deleted and people are banned so fast that the vast majority of current posters have no idea how rampant the biased and unbalanced moderation and enforcement of the “rules” has become. Especially Bayliss. I believe one of the worst areas overall is the American Idol section. People get wiped out in huge amounts there, from what it seems like. Most of which are banned without warning or justification (such as myself).

  37. Marjorie Levine Says:

    Drama:
Thank-you so much for the kind words.
    I greatly appreciate your comment.

  38. Misfitters Says:

Well, you all are welcome to join us ex-TWoPers over at http://www.royalmisfits.com and our various sister sites. We have a TWoP complaint thread over there, mostly dormant these days because we’ve all been banned so many times that we’ve become desensitized.

  39. Marjorie Levine Says:

USPS Track & Confirm sent me an E-mail today indicating
the certifed material that I sent to NBC president Jeff Zucker on
March 17th was delivered today, March 26th.
I live on 19th Street in Manhattan and 30 Rockefeller Plaza
is on 50th Street. It took 7 business days to arrive.
So, I jumped to a conclusion that it might have been refused, and
    for that I apologize.
It will now be interesting to see if any reply is forthcoming regarding
    all the “bannings.”

  40. Laura Linger Says:

I can tell you this, Marjorie: the powers that be at NBC have been frequenting my blog, reading specific gripes that I have about TWOP.

Here’s a blast from the past for those of us who were with the site back in the day: remember the tizzy fit and complete deletion of one of the site’s most absolute hilarious forums, Showbiz Moms And Dads? I suspect Miss Alli was behind it, but I don’t really recall. All that I do remember is that a “mod” got into a hissy, decided to be a total bitchass, and didn’t just LOCK the thread…it was completely destroyed.

It’s back, but it has never, ever been the same.

  41. Marjorie Levine Says:

A comment was left by “anonymous” at my blog in
the entry: “My bad,” which is about TWoP. It was unexpected to me
because I do not list my blog address at sites. So, it had to be found
    by a Google search.
    The comment was not supportive.

  42. Laura Linger Says:

Shrug it off. You shouldn’t be blogging if you can’t take negative comments. Christ on His Crapper, it’s a good day when I don’t receive a death threat. So take heart.

  43. Renee Says:

Does anyone know the reason why Real Housewives of NY is still locked at TWoP?

  44. Marjorie Levine Says:

Some “anonymous” poster has found my blog and adds
confrontational and offensive comments telling me
    “they don’t care.”
They don’t care?? They don’t care???
I put my whole day on hold. I now have to go to the post office to
send some certified letters to Jeffrey Immelt.
    lmao

  45. Banned Says:

Wow. I was just banned on TWoP as well. By Bayliss. I received a warning about three weeks ago and another yesterday where I banned for “blatant disregard of forum rules.” I’m glad I’m not alone.

  46. Sass McGhee Says:

I was also just banned after nearly 4 years of being a member. My banning was for the most asinine nonsensical reason I have ever seen on a forum. It was nothing less than the result of some idiot who somehow got a small amount of NON-REAL LIFE power letting it go to their head. I have been a moderator on a political forum before and I know an enormously inflated self indulgent ego when I see one. Jeeze, that board has just really gone down hill and if they keep banning people for NOTHING more than giving an opinion that they don’t agree with, it will become on giant boring fascist lockstep forum with 10 members.

  47. Sass Says:

I already left a comment about being banned but I am still so made that I wanted to add that it was Bayliss who banned me too and this below is why. I was responding to people in the American Idol thread that constantly posting about David Cook being just like Daughtry and others saying they thought David Cook was ugly so they didn’t like him, which is about the dumbest reason not to like a singer I have ever heard.

    I posted this:

There really isn’t a need to compare the two, they are two different people who are obviously influenced by the same music. Daughtry kicks ass and I bought his album without even knowing he was on Idol. I found out afterwards and was surprised. Then I started to watch Idol last season and now I am really liking David Cook. He has a great voice and if you listen to his tracks on iTunes he is GREAT. This guy is a cut above all the rest on this season and he will make it out there in the music world afterwards. Especially with anyone who wants to buy some NEW rock because there IS a market for rock out there we are just being ignored.

And for those that don’t like him because of his “looks”….what does that have to do with anything? I would prefer listening to an unattractive singer with exceptional talent than a hot singer that can’t sing worth $%@!. And there are PLENTY of those out there now which is why music sucks so bad right now.

Bayliss banned me with this snotty retarded message:

Defensive much? Please find a fan club or fan site where differing opinions are less of a priority.

Does THAT make ANY sense whatsoever? I posted a differing opinion yet he tells met to find a fan site where differing opinions are less of a priority? Doesn’t that mean that differing opinions are required on TWoP? And if so wasn’t I then following the rules? What a complete moron.

  48. Troll Says:

Looks like several more people have been “Baylissed” this week alone…. well, join the club. I was suddenly banned from TWoP about three weeks ago - for equally ridiculous “reasons”, imo. What’s interesting to me is how they seem to be targetting the more experienced (and more critical?), long-term posters for elimination… it’s starting to resemble Logan’s Run over there.

  49. Some Advice Says:

If you have been banned by a moderator and you are angry
because it seemed wrong, it is fine to come here and complain but
what you also must do is complain to the people who are in a
    position to help you.
Bravo TV owns TWoP. NBC owns Bravo. They are located
in NYC. Call or write. Tell them. The moderators work for
Bravo now. NBC TV is their supervisor and their employer.
In a store if you were treated poorly by a sales person,
who would you complain to? Correct, you go to their boss.
So take some action because commenting here without
writing and letting their boss know will change nothing.

  50. Sass Says:

I did write to their boss actually. I sent emails to the head moderator on TWop, to Bravo, and to NBC TV but honestly I highly doubt they will even get read or anything will be done about it. But at least I did try.

What I think is going on over there is you have this guy “Bayliss” who now has a “job” as a moderator for a big TV network message board and he now has some “power” online that he doesn’t have in his real life. He seems like a very angry, snotty, immature, little geek judging from the very rude and condescending remarks he makes when he leaves his banning message. Now he can kick people around at his will online and it makes him feel like a big man. The guy is a narcissist and a joke and like I said before, pretty soon he will have banned so many people that there will only be 100 people left, all mods and newbies that fall in lockstep with the other sheeple over there.

I guess the reason I am so angry about this is because I was treated like a 10 year old for one, I was left with the most snotty idiotic banning message that made absolutely no sense, and I was banned for no real reason. It really IS like being treated like crap at a store by a salesperson and that makes me mad too.

  51. Spiffy Says:

TWoP is run by egotistical psychos, and its far from a new development due to new ownership. The rules they operate under are vague and fluid, and the enforcement is usually completely arbitrary.

I’ll admit, over the years I’ve been banned a few times under a few identities. I’m not sure why I bother re-registering at all. I’m unfailingly polite in my posts, I debate people’s points but apologize publicly every single time if someone is offended somehow, I stay topical, and yet like clockwork some minor piece of nonsense is inevitably blown out of proportion by TWoP management, and the big thing about TWoP is there are usually NO APPEALS if they misinterpret something you say or do–even if THEY were in the wrong. I’ve had the damnedest posts challenged as confrontational by mods with agendas, where not a single actual poster in the topic (including people I was responding directly to) expressed ANY sign of being upset at me or thinking I was being rude or unfair to them. I’ve actually gotten notes/warnings that say stuff like “that sounds like chiding” or “someone could be offended by that”. When in fact, nobody was. In other words, I’ve been disciplined for what COULD happen, not what DID.

    TWoP sucks.

  52. Misfitter Says:

I’ve also been banned multiple time, all by TWoP Bayliss/Jacob. When I was first banned I lamented the injustice, moaned, cried, pulled my hair. Now seasoned, I find humor in each warnings I get from Jacob. Enough people have been banned at this point, and it has more to do with Bayliss than you, although if you want to avoid bans altogether: post like a robot, but even then you may not be safe.

  53. Renee Says:

Quick, go over and read in the Real Housewives of OC thread. and read what Mod Barnes wrote.

  54. Sass Says:

I just found this site from that section you pointed out about Mod Barnes banning some more people. http://tvsnarkaddict.iforums.us/

  55. Troll Says:

Wow, that Barnes is crazy! And I’m not buying his/her insistence that his/her actions have nothing to do with the interests of the higher-ups at Bravo or NBC, not for one minute am I buying that. Barnes doth protest too much.

I wonder if any of them ever remember, in the rare moments that they’re not running around screaming “off with their heads” like the Queen of Hearts, that TWoP was originally supposed to be… fun?

  56. Spiffy Says:

The only thing I question is that this is recent. I saw this behavior from them LONG before they sold the site. It’s worse now in the sense that they are spreading their net to other areas, but they’ve always run the site with a “no appeals” rule, and they’ve banned for a LONG TIME based on very arbitrary inconsistent personal notions. Glark used to ban people left and right because he “sensed” some kind of “tone” in someone’s note that nobody else did. I mean seriously. Nobody arguing, nobody offended, just “I think that sounds confrontational–BANNNED!” Like that. Barnes, Bayliss and the other current wack-jobs just seems to be carrying on that grand tradition, perhaps adding a layer of kissing up to Universal and/or exercising personal demons on top of that.

Actually, another thing that once happened to me, and I know from message trading also happened to many others, was TWoP writing to say that you were banned for X number of days or weeks and then them forgotting to reactivate you. Since Glark never answered his emails, even if he personally did the banning, THAT was fun to deal with.

I’ll compare this to lets say… Fans of Reality TV, where typically they are always willing to let you state your case, assuming you aren’t some idiot troll. TWoP banns people who are members for YEARS at the drop of a hat. No debate, no recourse, usually no response if you write them.

Heck, I even once had a forum moderator of a topic I contributed a LOT to email me and ask me why I hadn’t posted in weeks. (I’m guessing he just hadn’t bothered to look at my account status). When I told him I was banned and why, he was all like “Geez, I wish I could do something, but this stuff comes from the top.”

    Feh.

  57. Some Advice Says:

Again, posting here does nothing except make you feel better by
    venting.
Let Bravo TV know this. You are their customer when you
join TWoP. You see their advertising and buy the product.
Everybody knows NBC owns Bravo and everybody knows NBC
is in NYC. TWOP is not privately owned anymore and
there are public image concerns in corporations.
Get the NBC number from a 411 and call and ask for the Bravo
    department.
Or write a real mail with a stamp not E-mail. Get the address from
the operator. It’s done all the time.
There is always somebody in customer relations who takes
viewer concerns. Maybe there is even a viewer number where
you can leave a message about this. I do not think Bravo TV would
be happy about so many bannings for the frivolous
reasons listed here. They want happy viewers that enjoy their forums.
Tell them who bans you and why and that after your suspension
    you are not put back.
Don’t you think they should and would want to know?
Things change when lots of people get involved.
Alot of people complaining brought back another
season of The Wire on HBO.
If the stuff comes from the top, go to the top over the TWOP.

  58. tvsnarkaddict Says:

So, I’m not the only one seething in anger about the changes at TWOP. Good to know I’m not the only one, but it’s so very sad. I loved loved loved the old TWOP. I have been posting there since it was Mighty Big TV, as well.

I guess “spare the snark, spoil the network” can only be a valid claim until the network BUYS the site!

After getting “notes,” then a “warning,” I am on the TWOP list, and I am so done with them, anyways. However, I will be contacting the TWOP advertisers, Bravo and Universal to let them know why banning people and closing threads is probably not a GOOD idea.

So, I really don’t want to be a “pimp,” but I created a new site similar to TWOP - but I will NEVER warn or ban! I welcome snarky discussion, even if I don’t agree with it.

So, please check this out: http://tvsnarkaddict.iforums.us/

I think that the more people we have posting, the more fun it will be!

  59. Renee Says:

    I am sooooooooo there. Thanks.

  60. Marjorie Levine Says:

I can see a TWoP moderators’ reunion 20 years from now… at a Doubletree in Newark.
“How many did you ban on your best day?” “Shit man, on a good day I banned about 30 assholes.” “What are you doing now?” “I work for an auto insurance company. Somebody’s gotta give the jerks a hard time.” “I am a stay-at-home mom. Occasionally I go into Johnny’s class to help the teacher correct compositions. Then, I give her a list of the students who I think should fail.” “I work in a Social Security office. It’s a million laughs watching the old people squirm. Those fools should learn the rules.” “Remember that teacher who sent letters and begged to get back?” “Yeah man, we were so bad. You think she really believed we took her seriously? You think she really thought we gave a shit?” “Who knows?”
Yeah, who knows… You can go to my blog to read my entry regarding NBC’s final decision.
And a final last laugh: O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake, Lizzie Borden, Marjorie.
    Guess who lost her case?

  61. Some Advice Says:

A last laugh: O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake, Lizzie Borden, Marjorie.
    Guess who lost her case?

    NOW THAT IS HYSTERICAL!!!

  62. Feeling Feisty Says:

LMAO! That is good! Ya now this whole thing has made me so mad that I decided to create a forum myself too and make it the way I wished TWoP would have been. Light on the moderation and heavy on the feisty!

It’s brand new…come all, tell all!

    http://feistycritic.com/index.php

  63. Some Advice Says:

TWoP is so yesterday. Plenty of other sites are being created to replace TWoP for banned members. A new site with light moderation is exactly what will be appreciated. Let’s hope plenty of banned members find these new sites and have fun instead of anger.

  64. happytobebanned Says:

For a good time and some good venting - go here!

    http://bitterbutbrilliant.rapidboards.com/index.php?showforum=27

  65. nostalgic Says:

Ah, the smell of TWoP bitterness. How it takes me back. I was a TWoP forum regular about five years ago. I didn’t get banned, but left the site after my friends kept getting banned left and right. The mods were all better about engaging in e-mail back then, and we eventually got an admission out of Wing and Glark that sometimes they banned people for no reason whatsoever just to keep server traffic down. They’ve been on my list ever since (I still think Sars is all right, though). I don’t know the circumstances behind their leaving (I found this thread Googling around trying to find out), but it’s nice to think it had something to do with their banning asshattery, in a poetic justice kind of way. But seeing as the banning has apparently only gotten worse since the announcement, that’s probably not it. Durn.

  66. Laura Linger Says:

Sorry, happy, I’m just not getting what I need from that “bitter but brilliant” site (oh, is it now? really?). And to think, I am a minor celebrity over there. Too bad the reading comprehension level appears to be low. They’re so quick to point out the supposed fallacy of my supposed assertion about Bravo and eyeballs on a page, they don’t realize that that wasn’t my point at all. If people come for the forums and only the forums, which I myself and others have stated were the only attraction whatsoever for me, and Sars continually sent people to look at sites other than TWOP for various reasons, well, one might think that that removes eyeballs from the advertising on the site, which Bravo very much will care about. Trust me. I’ve had enough of their brass visiting my site for my Sars-related commentary in the past month to test and prove this hypothesis.

Sign me, um, Laura, um, Linger. Um.

  67. Laura Linger Says:

Wait a minute, I meant the SCARY, um, Laura, um, Linger.

    Um.

  68. Marjorie Levine Says:

A slight heads’ up: some of the members of BitterButBrilliant are copying the comments from this thread on this site and pasting them to the forums over there. Many can be found in “Shout Outs!”
I personally find their sarcastic and insulting comments (to what people have written here) rather vile and babyish. I would have expected them to be more supportive of some of the well-intentioned activity discussed here. It just proves one thing. We are capable of becoming exactly that which we hate. And why do they find people who get involved and who are strongly vocal “scary?” They fling that word around alot over there. People write to protest all sorts of things all the time. What’s so shocking about it?
I was not writing to NBC to initiate a “class action lawsuit.” Don’t be absurd. I wanted the executives to be aware of what was going on over there with regard to the “arbitrary and capricious” banning by moderators. As a retired teacher, I was bothered when a learning disabled person was banned because of poor spelling. I do not think the directors had any idea about all the bannings and I thought they would not be happy about it. It has to do with the image of a site they own.
So BBB, ridicule all you want. Just remember this. Be grateful for the “crazy” people who fight for change to make even the smallest and most seemingly innocuous things in life better for everybody. Your comments show no understanding of my intent.
And you don’t have to worry about my hobbies. I am a stand-up comic and I perform all the time in NYC comedy clubs. My only “crazy” activity was to give a step-by-step progress report here. And I admit I am even “crazier” with this diatribe I am now typing. However, I won’t delete it… I’ll Just continue to live and learn; live and learn. And get even “crazier.” On stage.
But, copy it and paste it. Maybe a few NYers will show up at my next comedy show. I always see the bright side.

  69. Marjorie Levine Says:

Laura, I don’t find you “scary.” I admire you; you are the kind of woman who inspires.

  70. Laura Linger Says:

Marjorie, FYI: due to some rather unpleasant Internet stalking I had received in the past, I make it my policy to never respond to phone calls regarding my site. It had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with you that I never phoned you back. I don’t think you are crazy, and the stats for my site will bear me out. Especially around the time of The Unholy Trinity’s departure, I had NBC/GE/Bravo frequenting my site, and even more specifically, my criticisms of TWOP, like wildfire.

Although we could have some fun with this. You are now nicknamed Crazy, and I am Scary. Mkay?

  71. Marjorie Levine Says:

Laura: I joined BBB and had a little immature fun over there for a while tonight. But, the banter was giving me a migraine. So I politely said good-bye. I will go back when I go back, but I am not interested in being a regular. I do not think they will miss me. They can call me “crazy;” they can call me a “lunatic.” Who cares? The internet is a regular Rorschach test.
I am curious as to how you know that Bravo and NBC frequent your site. How can you identify who reads your site if they leave no comments?
I understand completley why you never called me back. We can talk in E-mails if you prefer. Do you have my E-mail address?

  72. Marjorie Levine Says:

    typo: completely, for spellers….

  73. Get A Room Says:

Marjorie the Crazy and Laura the Scary need to get a room.

    Sorry Lee.

  74. Marjorie Levine Says:

Get a Room, I am happy to see we are the stars of your internet show. Now you are fixated on us, aren’t you? I am always amazed how “crazy” and “scary” people become the obsessions of boring people. Instead of reading about JLo or Lindsay or Britney, he now reads about our “crazy” and “scary” exploits and posts comments. Instead of reading Gawker, or TMZ, or Perez Hilton, he comes here to read about what we are doing, lmao.

  75. Nunya Says:

I tried to join BBB and never got validated. When I joined I was so pissed off over being banned for NOTHING at TWoP that I wanted to complain to someone…anyone! That is when I found them. So when I joined I saw that new registrations were having to be validated and it ended up being a very slow process and I waited and still no validation so I gave up. I am over at a new site feistycritic.com that is just starting up. There aren’t a lot of members yet but it looks promising and they aren’t banning nazi’s there. There is a TWoP Refugee thread too.

  76. Drama Says:

BBB doesn’t seem any better than TWoP. They seem to pick on some of the idiot TWoP posters, not the people who are running the place. They seem to think they’re superior to everyone - TWoP refugees and current posters, and the TWoP management. At least they offer equal opportunity condescension. It seems like a cliquish little group that doesn’t welcome newcomers unless you’re “cool” enough to fit in. I don’t see how that is any type of a reasonable TWoP alternative. Although I am sure the link was not posted here to offer TWoP Bannees an alternative board where we’d be more welcome, but to let us know that we’re being made fun of over there. Oh well, whatever entertains them.

  77. Lee Says:

It’s neat to me that such conversation has developed over here.

Personally, I don’t think that there’s much to be done about the TWOP situation. I’m glad in a sense that it wasn’t just me but it seems like a real problem…but I doubt it’s on anyone’s radar at NBCU.

  78. NBCUStaff Says:

Let me confirm that the perceived problems at TWoP are not on anyone’s radar at NBCU. There are a few of us employees who get a kick out of TWoP and have for many years prior to the Bravo buy out, but Zucker and company don’t give two shits about your banning. Please get real.

As for the reason I say “perceived” problems at TWoP, it’s simple. The majority of what is wrong with TWoP does, in fact, lie squarely on the shoulders of the posters. The rules at TWoP are not that difficult, but when a user allows themselves to get pulled into a schoolyard argument over a TV show, who is to blame? The site management, or the poster participating?

While I definitely do not agree with every snotty comment from TWoP management, I have to agree that sometimes a polite approach is completely ignored by the rank and file and the only way to get through seems to be to break out the size 9’s.

Many of us also enjoy the various “anti-TWoP” sites. TWoP Crit was one of the first, but dried up and has really gone down hill. BBB which started as TWOPSUCKS is actually quite a bit of fun, but I would guess that after being through several years of new users showing up screaming about their ‘unfair bannings’, only to realize that the ‘unfair banning’ was actually within the rules, they are probably weary.

Your stories are not new, nor are they a result of the Bravo buy out. TWoP is and always has been a site that warns and bans and expects their users to follow their rules. It’s not that difficult, unless you’re a moron or just don’t think the rules apply to you.

Oh, and did you know that if you get banned, you can sign up with a new name any time you like? Yeah. It’s just that easy. It really isn’t the end of the world.

Oh, and like the new template, Lee.

  79. NBCUStaff Says:

Oh, I almost forgot. To Laura who wrote this:

“I can tell you this, Marjorie: the powers that be at NBC have been frequenting my blog, reading specific gripes that I have about TWOP.”

Yeah. That’s not TPTB at NBCU. That’s me any my buds. It’s been kinda slow lately and we always like a good trainwreck to point and laugh at.

  80. Some Advice Says:

    What’s good for the goose…
An Admin at BBB chastised the “banned one at TWoP” who wrote letters to the NBC PTB. The site Admin at BBB seemed angry that “the banned one” joined their site and responded with great wit and humor to their provocations and ridicule. It was OK to come to this site and transplant her comments and make fun, but when she outwitted and outplayed then, they got angry.
Here’s what was posted at BBB by Admin:
” Ok. It’s getting old now. Shout Outs is the topic.”
” Wow. No wonder TWoP banned you.”
” See .. when the site Admin comes in to tell the posters to return to the topic, it’s not the time to attempt to be funny.
Your comedy act must be a fucking riot.
Familiarize yourself with the rules here, with how to conduct yourself .. especially after a Mod or Admin has issued a reminder .. or .. you know .. leave.”
It was OK for them to make fun of the situation for days with transplanted quotes, but when she outwitted them, all her posts were deleted. We do become that which we hate, I guess. I will try to transplant what was deleted, which was hysterically funny.

  81. Some Advice Says:

Here is is, she saved it to her blog:
You are shocked! I shocked you! I apologize for shocking you!
    1. The Godfather: film director wakes up in bed with a dead horse’s head
    2. The Shining: Jack Torrance growls, “Heeeere’s Johnny”
    3. Psycho: Marion Crane gets stabbed to death in the shower
    4. The Exorcist: Regan turns her head 360 degrees
    5. Marjorie sends a letter to Jeff Zucker about a “banning”

I am in excellent company! I personally think #5 is the most shocking, and I will write a strongly worded letter to the AFI to demand my action be placed for consideration on their list. Such an esoteric group to which I belong!

    Funniest moments:
    1. “Some Like It Hot”: Well, nobody’s perfect
    2. “Shampoo”: Honey, where have you been? We’ve been looking all over for you
    3. “The Seven Year Itch”: It sort of cools the ankles, doesn’t it
    4. “Private Benjamin”: Look at this place. The army couldn’t afford drapes?
    5. Marjorie sends a letter…

OK, enough nonsense. Time to go to the dentist. My dentures are loose.

  82. NBCUStaff Says:

But her posts weren’t on topic. There are a bunch of other threads she could have gone to. That nonsense was going on since last night. The Mod comes in and says get back on topic, and she posts poetry and comedy stylings. Actually, “comedy” should be in quotes. So, no. She didn’t “outwit” them. She exhibited exactly why she was banned at TWoP.

  83. Lee Says:

Here’s my short take on the idea of rules.

The ‘good’ purpose is rules is to provide order and improve a community. I don’t have rules here posted anywhere but I do moderate stuff like spam or total craziness.

On a site like TWOP, my experience is that some of the moderators don’t understand how rules are supposed to make things better and nicer. I had the same experience with Wikipedia editors.

I don’t like Rule Nazis, wherever they are.

  84. NBCUStaff Says:

That’s entirely possible, Lee. Especially since many of the Mods at TWoP are new. But, honestly, as someone who has been at TWoP since it was MBTV and who has Fanatic status without a single warning or note on my record, I have to say that a great deal of the problem is the average user just ignoring the Mods.

I’ve seen many in-thread warnings from Mods that are far from clear. That leads to much confusion. The YouTube policy back and forth is an excellent example of the right hand not understanding what the left hand meant when they wrote the rule.

  85. Lee Says:

It’s a customer service issue to me. They’ve done famous experiments about giving people power and it’s a corrupting influence. A company’s culture can really effect how it’s people deal with trouble and TWOP seems to have a culture where bannings are common.

“Ignoring the mods’ is a kind of power game. Someone is caught unawares, the Mod smacks ‘em down - and then it becomes a struggle if the user resists arrest or talks back. On a site which is a lot of user created content, it’s madness, IMO .

The way to fix it is to change the culture - get rid of the warning system. Question whether the rule is a good one or not and get rid of as many rules as possible Help people understand the rules and help find ways for them to do what they want.

But nobody asked me. If you want more, I’ll give a short presentation at the commissary.

  86. NBCUStaff Says:

Will you have PowerPoint and handouts? We’re big on PowerPoint and handouts.

  87. Lee Says:

It’s also amusing and vaguely sad to me that I get my picture in the effing Los Angeles TIMES today - but all the comments and traffic to my blog are from a month’s old post about TWOP.

  88. Lee Says:

I could do that, sure. We have a projector here in the office.

  89. NBCUStaff Says:

TWoP is a polarizing entity. They’ve always had that iron-fist thing going on. Hell. I’m glad they got rid of the clip art they used to use when they were smacking down posters. *sigh* Back in the day when they’d use those pics of the giant boot stepping on a wee little person. Many, many years pre-Bravo.

So, hey! Maybe folks should be positive? Now that the Big 3 are gone (and Miss Alli), maybe it’ll get better? Because, really. It’s been very strident for many years.

And we can use WebEx for our meeting.

Now I’m going to go read the Times.

    ;)

  90. MarjorieLevine Says:

from a poster at BBB about “lunacy”): “Rather humorous from someone who wrote to the president of NBC about a banning.”
I guess that shocked him… He should write Thematic Apperception tests.
Or this comment from another member at BBB: “It was the letter campaign to NBC President Jeff Zucker — or more properly, Jeff Zucker’s assistant, who is surely charged to open, glance at, and promptly recycle all such correspondence — that people thought was funny.”
For days they were transplanting comments from this site and ridiculing. No Admin called “Topic.” So I registered to join in on the fun. But when I replied and posted the above lists, why did the BBB site Admin get angry? I guess nothing disarms or enrages more than some good self-effacing humor. Sort of like: “call me the name, I play the game” or “tell me something I DON’T know.” It outwits quite well.

  91. MarjorieLevine Says:

er…. um…. I was banned for not beginning a sentence with a capital letter.

  92. MarjorieLevine Says:

Here is a direct quote from my Member Note/Warning Center at TWoP:
Miss Alli: Added a warning Please don’t cross-post the same thing in multiple threads. There was no need to add your thing about how the DR sessions seem scripted to the Live Feeds topic, where it’s not even on topic anyway.
TWoP Mars: Please remember to use proper capitalization.
TWoP Bayliss: Banned for ignoring previous warnings.
    Account Status: Banned

I was not banned for what “NBCUStaff” here is calling “exhibited exactly why she was banned at TWoP.” Another holder of an online Rorschach test degree.
I still want to know why the transplanting and ridiculing was off topic and went on since yesterday at 6 AM at BBB and when I joined in the fun, I was warned by an Admin and “Topic” was called?

  93. bob Says:

Marj, upthread you said another reason for your banning was posting a question in a thread without reading it first.

You are here to complain about TwoP, and mock what you perceive to be mock-worthy. You can’t really be surprised that in another corner of the internets, there are people who find your breathless tale of woe (complete with registered letters to Zucker) over being banned in a forum, to be a wee bit mock-worthy. That’s life in the tubes.

  94. NBCUStaff Says:

Marjorie, do you have a blog? Someone up thread mentioned your blog. I think it would be great if you’d link to it so this discussion about YOU can continue on YOUR site.

  95. MarjorieLevine Says:

That reason (about reading the thread) was not listed in my member notes; that reason was cited later in an E-mail from TWoP to more fully justify their action.
Mock all you want, have fun till you are blue in the face, but at least let me join in the fun!
When I participated at BBB in the mocking with some self-effacing humor, “Topic” was called and I was warned.
