Get Into The Black Friday

Lauren made a great Thanksgiving Day dinner yesterday, got it all done early and so we had plenty of time to relax after the meal. Now, it’s ‘the biggest sale day of the year!’ and oh sure, there’s plenty of stuff I want. Electronics and gadgets and household doo dads.

But I’m really completely sick of being so week to week on our finances. It’s a constant scramble and I’ve spent thousands of dollars this past year on late fees and overdraft fees and payday loan interest – in other words, on nothing.

So instead of shopping today or buying anything, I decided to make a couple of payments and try to use ‘Black Friday’ to get myself more into the black.

One free tool I’ve been using is a website called Mint that lets you track all of your spending and back accountants, credit cards…even your PayPal account. It’s like a free Quicken, sort of kind of – less BS and more about keeping track of stuff.

Another thing I’ve been thnking a lot about for a few months is this nine part series on YouTube that I found, with popular author and radio host Dave Ramsey talking about Dumping Debt. I’m not a Christian and Dave Ramsey is and he talks a little about it. No big deal for me because there was so much valuable food for thought in here. I actually first heard about Dave Ramsey from This American Life, which isn’t exactly Christian talk radio.

Here’s something interesting I noticed – as of today, over 14,000 people watched Part 1 of this series but only around 5000 watched Part 9. Not surprising but interesting. Anyway – here’s completely free advice on finances that you can watch in about 90 minutes – broken up into 9 bite sized chunks.
